Ongoing fund expenses and trading costs answer different questions. Record expenses from the prospectus, then timestamp the spread and any premium or discount to net asset value.
Research problem and method
Separate fund documents from price observations
Start with the fund sponsor and verify the ticker, share class, and source document. Ongoing expenses are part of the fund structure. A possible trade depends on the bid and ask. Keep document figures and trading observations in separate fields.
The spread is the difference between ask and bid. Divide that difference by the midpoint to compare it on a relative basis. A premium or discount to NAV instead compares market price to net asset value. Record the time, trading venue, and timestamp for both values.
Two funds may have different trading currencies, observation times, or index versions. Align those inputs before interpreting a difference. State whether the figure is a single observation or a series. One snapshot is insufficient evidence of persistent trading costs.
