Research Methodology

See how we assess crypto, tokens, stocks, ETFs, NFTs, commodities, and startups, with weights, sources, and rules for data gaps.

Three metrics with distinct purposes

Research Score

Rates the documented characteristics from 0 (weak) to 100 (strong). It does not estimate the probability of a positive return.

Risk Score

Rates identified risks from 0 (low) to 100 (substantial). A higher score means more identified risk.

Evidence Confidence Index

Captures evidence quality and completeness based on provenance, recency, verifiability, and corroboration.

Calculation and missing data

  1. Define the subject, data cutoff, and assessment criteria. Weights in each framework total 100%.
  2. Rate evidence from 0 to 100 for each criterion. 0 indicates unsupported claims, 50 partial evidence, and 100 current, verifiable, corroborated evidence. Document intermediate ratings.
  3. For each metric, sum each rating × its weight, divide by 100, and round to a whole number. Missing evidence contributes zero to the evidence index. If there is no evidence, the index is withheld as well.
  4. If a criterion’s evidence rating is below 60, data is missing, or a material conflict remains unresolved, we withhold the research and risk scores. We show the criterion, its weight, and what evidence is missing.

Each result includes its framework and cutoff date. Scores across asset classes have limited comparability.

Methodology version

Assessment frameworks by asset class

Cryptocurrencies

  • Liquidity and tradability35%
  • Concentration and custody25%
  • Technology and dependencies25%
  • Governance and disclosure15%

Typical sources Order book snapshots with venue and timestamp, block explorers with block height, and protocol documentation.

Limitations Order books reflect a point in time. Wallet addresses do not reliably identify beneficial owners.

Tokens and presales

  • Contract controls and permissions35%
  • Distribution and unlocks30%
  • Governance20%
  • Observed liquidity15%

Typical sources Contract data, documented roles and proxy addresses, whitepaper, allocation and unlock schedule.

Limitations Reviewing documented permissions does not replace a code audit. Unlocks do not predict sales.

Stocks

  • Cash flow and earnings quality30%
  • Balance sheet and funding30%
  • Business model and concentration25%
  • Disclosure and governance15%

Typical sources Annual and interim reports, regulatory filings, financial notes, and comparable reporting periods.

Limitations Metrics must fit the business model. Scenarios depend on documented assumptions.

ETFs

  • Index and concentration35%
  • Replication and fund structure25%
  • Costs and tracking25%
  • Trading and currency15%

Typical sources Fund prospectus and key information documents, index methodology, published holdings, and documented trading data.

Limitations Fund and trading currencies capture only part of currency exposure. Expenses and tracking difference are assessed separately.

NFTs

  • Trading and liquidity30%
  • Holder concentration25%
  • Contract and metadata25%
  • Documented rights20%

Typical sources Collection and contract identifier, documented sales and wallet holdings, metadata, and published usage terms.

Limitations One wallet can represent many owners. Transaction patterns are clues that need corroboration.

Commodities

  • Supply and demand30%
  • Trading and liquidity25%
  • Instrument and contract structure25%
  • Currency and pricing sources20%

Typical sources Published production and inventory data, exchange contract specifications, and time series with unit and currency.

Limitations Spot, futures, and commodity-linked securities have different risks. Maturities and roll costs are assessed separately.

Startups and businesses

  • Demand and revenue evidence30%
  • Cash and funding30%
  • Business model and execution25%
  • Structure and governance15%

Typical sources Company registries and records, authorized financial data, contracts, and evidence for business metrics.

Limitations Pipeline, revenue, and cash receipts are different measures. Unconfirmed funding stays outside the base case.
